For most travellers, no. Since 1 October 2026 the 7-day JR Pass costs ¥53,000 (about €300), and the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route costs less than half that with single tickets. It only pays off if you chain several very long journeys in a few days.
- Classic 14-day route: about ¥32,000 in tickets versus ¥84,000 for the pass. Better without it.
- Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Tokyo in 7 days: about ¥44,000 versus ¥53,000. Still better without it.
- It pays off if in 7 days you do something like Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Kanazawa–Tokyo plus more day trips by train.
- It’s no use in Okinawa: there are no JR trains there.
JR Pass prices from 1 October 2026
JR has raised prices for the second time in three years. This is what it costs now (adults; children aged 6 to 11 pay half):
| Pass | Ordinary class | Green Car (first class) |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥53,000 (≈ €303) | ¥74,000 (≈ €423) |
| 14 days | ¥84,000 (≈ €480) | ¥116,000 (≈ €663) |
| 21 days | ¥105,000 (≈ €600) | ¥147,000 (≈ €840) |
Approximate rate: €1 ≈ ¥175.
What it covers and what it doesn’t
- Covers: almost all JR trains, including the Hikari and Kodama shinkansen, the Yamanote Line in Tokyo and the JR ferry to Miyajima.
- Doesn’t cover the Nozomi and Mizuho as standard, the fastest shinkansen. You can ride them by paying a separate supplement.
- Doesn’t cover the Tokyo or Osaka metro, or private railways such as Odakyu (for Hakone), Tobu (for Nikko) or Kintetsu.
The maths, route by route
Guide prices for single tickets with a reserved seat, one way:
| Journey | Approx. price | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Kyoto | ¥14,000–14,500 | 2 hr 15 min |
| Kyoto → Hiroshima | ¥11,000 | 1 hr 40 min |
| Hiroshima → Tokyo | ¥19,000 | 4 hr |
| Kyoto → Nara (JR train) | ¥720 | 45 min |
| Kyoto → Osaka (JR train) | ¥580 | 30 min |
Classic 14-day route: no pass
Our 14-day route flies into Tokyo and home from Osaka. Trains between cities and day trips add up to about ¥32,000 (≈ €183). The 14-day pass costs ¥84,000: you save about €300 per person without it.
7 days with Hiroshima: no pass
Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo comes to about ¥44,000. The 7-day pass costs ¥53,000. It’s still cheaper without the pass, though the gap narrows.
7 days at full speed: with pass
If in one week you do Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Kanazawa → Tokyo, the long journeys alone add up to ¥55,000–60,000. Add a few more day trips by train (Nara, Himeji or Nikko on the JR line) and the pass starts to pay off. Be warned: it’s a very intense pace.
21 days in central Japan: no pass
On the grand 21-day route trains come to about ¥68,000 spread over three weeks. The 21-day pass costs ¥105,000. Not worth it either.
What to do instead of the JR Pass
- Buy single tickets at the station or in the SmartEX app for the shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima. You can book them in advance.
- Use an IC card (Suica, PASMO or ICOCA) for local trains, metro and buses. It works all over Japan and you can keep it on your phone.
- Check the regional passes: there are JR passes just for Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara), the north or Hokkaido. They’re much cheaper and sometimes do pay off.
- For Hakone, Odakyu’s Hakone Free Pass covers the train from Shinjuku and the whole loop: mountain railway, ropeway and boat.
- In Okinawa there are no JR trains: hiring a car is the practical option.
When I would buy it
- You make lots of long journeys in 7 consecutive days.
- You go to northern Honshu (Sendai, Aomori) and the west (Hiroshima) on the same trip.
- You want the ease of hopping on any JR train without buying a ticket, even if it costs a bit more.
If it suits you, buy it on the official website or from an authorised seller. You’ll find options in the travel kit.
Our calculator compares the pass with single tickets for your route and tells you which is cheaper.
